Editorial Guidelines
Last updated
Insurance decisions affect people's finances, so we hold our guides to a clear set of rules. This page describes them.
Our standards
- Every statistic and legal requirement has a source. The source is linked in the text with a numbered reference and listed at the end of the guide.
- Primary sources come first. We prefer regulators and government agencies over articles that summarize them.
- No invented figures. We do not estimate prices, create averages or publish city-level numbers that we cannot trace to a published source.
- No unsupported superlatives. We do not call a company the best or the cheapest. Where we discuss how to compare companies, we explain the criteria and where to find the data.
- Plain English. Technical terms are defined the first time they appear.
- Dates are honest. The updated date changes only when the content has actually been reviewed.
How a guide is produced
We start from the questions people ask about a topic and collect the official publications that answer them. We draft the guide, check each fact against its source, and read the result for clarity and balance before publishing. We use software tools, including AI-assisted drafting, to help research and write. Tools do not replace the source check: a claim that cannot be matched to a source is removed.
Authorship and review
Guides are credited to the Help Insurance Editorial Team. We do not create fictional authors or reviewers. Unless a reviewer is named on a page, the guide has not been reviewed by a licensed insurance professional, and it should be read as general education rather than professional advice.
Updates
Insurance data is published on a delay and laws change. We revisit guides when a cited source releases new data, when a law that we describe changes, and at least once a year. Material changes are reflected in the updated date.
Corrections
If we publish something wrong, we fix it promptly and update the date on the page. To report an error, write to us through the contact page and include the page address and the source that shows the correct information.
Independence
We do not accept payment to change what a guide says. Help Insurance does not currently have commercial relationships with insurers. If we add advertising or affiliate links in the future, they will be labeled, disclosed on this page and kept separate from editorial decisions.
