Key takeaways

  • No company is the cheapest for everyone. The cheapest insurer for you depends on your state, record, age, car and coverage.
  • The lowest possible premium is a liability-only policy at your state's minimum limits, which pays nothing for your own car or injuries.
  • Before choosing the lowest quote, check limits, deductibles, listed drivers, fees and the company's complaint record.
  • A policy is only cheap if it also pays when you need it.
In this guide

There is no single cheapest car insurance company. Each insurer prices risk with its own formula, so the company that is cheapest for your neighbor may be among the most expensive for you. The cheapest policy for you is the lowest quote for the coverage you need, from a company that will pay when you claim.

This guide is about that last part: what to check so that the lowest price is also a sound choice.

Why lists of the cheapest companies disagree

Rankings of the cheapest insurers are built by pricing a sample driver, with a particular age, car, address, record and coverage, across several companies. Change any of those details and the order can change. That is why two rankings published in the same month can name different winners, and why neither may match your result.

Use such lists to decide which companies to include in your comparison. Do not use them in place of a quote.

What the cheapest policy actually is

The lowest premium you can legally buy is liability coverage at your state's minimum limits. Nationally, liability coverage averaged $813 per insured vehicle in 2024, compared with $1,613 for a policy that also included collision and comprehensive 1. Minimum-limits policies cost less than that liability average, because the average includes drivers who chose higher limits.

Here is what the saving buys, and what it does not.

Situation Minimum liability policy Policy with collision, comprehensive and higher limits
You damage another person's car Paid up to your property damage limit Paid up to a higher limit
You injure someone Paid up to your bodily injury limits Paid up to higher limits
Your car is damaged in a crash you caused Not covered Covered, minus your deductible
Your car is stolen or damaged by hail Not covered Covered, minus your deductible
The damage you cause exceeds your limits You owe the difference Less likely, because limits are higher

Example

California's minimum property damage limit is $15,000 2. If you cause a crash that totals a vehicle worth $40,000, a minimum policy pays $15,000 and the remaining $25,000 is your responsibility. The same logic applies to injuries, where costs can be far higher.

What to compare before you choose the lowest quote

Check Why it matters
Liability limits A lower price often simply reflects lower limits
Deductibles A quote with a $2,000 deductible is not comparable with one at $500
Uninsured motorist coverage Sometimes left out to make a quote look cheaper
Listed and excluded drivers A household member who is excluded has no coverage when driving your car
Policy length Compare cost per year, not six months against twelve
Fees Installment, policy and cancellation fees are not always in the headline price
Introductory discounts Ask whether the price is likely to change at the first renewal
The company's record Complaint data and financial strength are public. See best car insurance

If two quotes differ on any of the first six rows, ask for a requote before you compare prices. Our guide to car insurance quotes explains how.

When the minimum can be a reasonable choice

A minimum policy is not automatically a mistake. It can be a defensible choice when:

  • Your car has a low market value and you could replace it without borrowing
  • You own the car outright, so no lender requires more
  • The alternative is driving with no insurance at all

Even then, two low-cost additions are worth pricing. The first is the next step up in liability limits, which often costs less than people expect. The second is uninsured motorist coverage, given that the Insurance Research Council estimates 15.4 percent of drivers had no insurance in 2023 3.

When the cheapest policy is the wrong one

  • You have a loan or lease. Lenders require collision and comprehensive 4. If you do not carry them, the lender can buy coverage on your behalf and add the cost to your loan, usually at a much higher price and protecting only the lender.
  • You have savings, a home or a steady income. These are what a lawsuit can reach if you cause more damage than your limits cover.
  • You depend on your car and could not replace it. Without collision and comprehensive, a single crash or theft leaves you without transport.

Think in cost per unit of protection

A more useful question than which quote is cheapest is what each extra dollar buys. Ask for the price at two or three levels of coverage from the same company:

  1. State minimum liability only
  2. Higher liability limits with uninsured motorist coverage
  3. The same, plus collision and comprehensive

The gaps between those three prices tell you what each layer of protection costs for you. Often the step from the first to the second is the best value on the page.

The bottom line

Find your cheapest company by comparing quotes on your own details, not by reading a ranking. Then make sure the low price reflects a lower cost and not a smaller policy. Frequently asked questions

Which company has the cheapest car insurance?
It differs from driver to driver. Each insurer uses its own formula, so a company that is cheapest for a 45-year-old with a clean record may be expensive for a 22-year-old or for someone with a recent accident. Lists of cheapest companies are based on sample drivers. The only way to find your cheapest company is to compare quotes for your own details.
What is the cheapest type of car insurance?
A liability-only policy at your state's minimum limits. It satisfies the law and pays for damage you cause to others, up to those limits. It does not pay to repair your car or, in most states, to treat your injuries.
Is the cheapest car insurance good enough?
It is enough to drive legally. Whether it is enough for you depends on what you could lose. If you cause damage above your limits, you are responsible for the difference, and without collision or comprehensive you pay for your own car.
Is a six-month policy cheaper than a twelve-month policy?
The six-month price is lower because it covers half the time. Compare the cost per year. A twelve-month policy also keeps your price fixed for longer, while a six-month policy can be repriced sooner.
What if no company will insure me at a price I can afford?
Contact your state insurance department. States have arrangements, often called an assigned risk plan or residual market, for drivers who cannot find coverage in the regular market, and some have low-cost programs for drivers with limited income.
